On 3-4 June 2026, the DESSERT project participated in LUBMAT 2026, held at the Euskalduna Conference Centre in Bilbao, Spain. The conference, jointly organised by TEKNIKER, ATTEN2, Bureau Veritas and the University of Central Lancashire, brought together leading experts from academia and industry in the fields of lubrication, tribology, maintenance and condition monitoring.
As part of the conference programme, DESSERT contributed with an oral presentation entitled “Hydrogen related mechanism influencing the galling behaviour of austenitic stainless steels in threaded components”, delivered by Beatriz Fernandez-Diaz from TEKNIKER.

The presentation explored the influence of hydrogen-related mechanisms on the galling behaviour of austenitic stainless steels used in threaded components, providing valuable insights into material performance under hydrogen service conditions. These findings are particularly relevant for the development of safe and reliable underground hydrogen storage solutions, which are at the core of the DESSERT project.

LUBMAT 2026 provided an excellent opportunity to share project results with a highly specialised audience, engage in technical discussions with experts from across Europe and beyond, and strengthen connections between advanced materials research and industrial applications. DESSERT’s participation also highlighted the importance of collaboration between research organisations, industry stakeholders and technology providers in addressing the challenges associated with the hydrogen value chain and supporting the transition towards a more sustainable energy system.
