DESSERT PROJECT Advanced thread connected production string for hydrogen storage in underground formations

DESSERT

At DESSERT

We focus on advancing underground hydrogen storage (UHS) technologies to support the energy transition. We aim to develop a cutting-edge production string prototype for the safe storage and extraction of hydrogen gas. Our innovative production string features high-quality threaded connections and stainless steel pipes, ensuring secure hydrogen containment across a wide range of pressures, temperatures, and loads.

WHAT WE DO

RESEARCH

- Study the interactions between the reservoir and the hydrogen stored (geochemical and microbial reactions)
- Define string specifications and testing procedures.
- Study hydrogen embrittlement in stainless steel.
- Assess leakage risks from the connection.

DESIGN

- Selection of the most suitable stainless steels, lubricants and coatings.
- Design advanced modelling of hydrogen embrittlement and seal tightness of the premium threaded connection.

ANALYSIS

- Validation of lab-scale test methodologies to assess the performance of the stainless-steel grades in presence of hydrogen gas and to simulate the specific tribological behavior of the premium threaded connection.
- Analyse the integrity of different lubricated solutions exposed to hydrogen.

VALIDATION

- Evaluate the galling sensitivity of connections under repeated make-and-break operations.
- Determine the optimal make up torque for the application.
- Assess sealability under laboratory and real-world conditions.
- Ensure the reliability and performance of the connection design in practical and operational environments.

TECHNICAL STANDARD DEFINITION

- Define technical specifications for the production string, including material, dimension and mechanical properties of tubes and geometrical features of the connection.
- Draft a comprehensive testing guideline to validate threaded connections for hydrogen service.
- Ensure performance and reliability in hydrogen service conditions.
